CEP High School Experience, May 2008
Written by Rubi, CEP High School Student
My name is Rubi and I am a senior at Pasadena High School in Pasadena, TX. This year I had the opportunity to participate in the Career Exploration Program (CEP) and work at NASA Johnson Space Center in the Texas Aerospace Scholars (TAS) program office. I realize now that participating in this program is the best decision I ever made. I have accomplished many goals and also formed new aspirations that I will continue to strive for throughout my life. Working with everyone at NASA has motivated me to do greater things and has given me many exciting opportunities and memories.
The first event that grabbed my attention was a Space Exploration Educators Conference (SEEC) tour. I saw the T-38 planes and was amazed by how fast they went, as well as the WB-57 aircraft which has an enormous wingspan and is the only one of its kind.
I also helped with the Community College Aerospace Scholars (CAS) program and served as a judge in a CAS Rover Competition, where college students work in groups to build a rover that will work on the Mars terrain. It is a worthwhile effort because many young people are motivated to continue and not give up on their dreams.
During the Yuri’s Night at Space Center Houston, I had the chance to meet the director of Johnson Space Center, Mr. Michael Coats. I was extremely excited when he came over to our booth and I introduced myself and told him about how I came to be at NASA.
Another experience that I will always remember was meeting astronaut Barbara Morgan. I actually had the opportunity to meet her and take a picture. I was thrilled!
All of these experiences together have given me a wider view on ho
w you can continue reaching for your hopes and dreams no matter what obstacles occur. My experience here at NASA was wonderful, but unfortunately it has come to an end. Now I will continue working towards my goals and the next step is becoming a United States Marine. I plan on continuing my education and majoring in biochemistry and also becoming an officer in the Marines. My experience in the CEP program has been a fantastic opportunity that helped me see my goals in a larger mirror, with the reflection of others as my guides.
