CEP Student Awarded Langley GIS Internship
Congratulations to 3-year Career Exploration Program (CEP) college student Alex Moreno for receiving a NASA Langley Research Center Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Internship. Alex began his CEP experience during his senior year at Sam Rayburn High School in Houston, TX. After graduation, Alex pipelined into the CEP college program and completed his 2-year appointment, gaining work experience in three organizations at NASA Johnson Space Center: the Electronic Design Branch, Institutional Procurement Office, and the Planning and Integration Office.
Alex credits his CEP experience for helping shape his educational and career goals. “Working in the CEP program has been a life changing event for me,” said Alex. “Before joining the CEP Program, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life or what direction to turn. The CEP program opened my eyes to a vast amount of career options at NASA ranging from business to engineering and even technology.”
USRA’s Career Exploration Program provides select students with opportunities to work at NASA Johnson Space Center during their senior year in high school or while they are enrolled full-time in college. CEP encourages students to complete their education and consider degree fields in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while providing them with the financial support and work experience they need to embark on a successful career benefiting the Space Program.
After completing his CEP appointment in the summer of 2008, Alex continued through the NASA educational pipeline and was awarded a Langley GIS internship. As a member of the GIS team, Alex will work on projects involving GIS Software, Digital Cartography, GPS, AutoCAD, Surveying, Engineering, and Remote Sensing at NASA Johnson Space Center.
Alex is currently pursuing his Civil Engineering degree with a minor in GIS at San Jacinto College. After his internship, he plans to transfer to Texas A&M University to complete his education, earn a Master’s Degree, and then return to NASA to work with the GIS team.
