CEP High School Student Attends LULAC Conference
Career Exploration Program high school student Martin Guevara attended the prestigious LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) youth leadership conference in Washington, D.C. With more than 700 councils nationwide, LULAC is a non-profit organization that focuses on education, civil rights, and employment for Hispanics.
Martin was selected to apply for the conference through his school counselor and was one of fifty-six students to receive a fully funded trip to Washington, D.C. While in the nation’s Capitol, students discussed issues impacting the Latino community with national leaders from Congress, corporate America, and other public and private institutions. Martin was intrigued by others’ thoughts and opinions, and explains his favorite part was “watching his peers stand up for what they believed in.” He left the conference with a new perspective and a better understanding of the minds of those representing the Latino community.
Back at school for his senior year, Martin was challenged to apply what he learned at the conference by starting a LULAC council at his high school. Martin will establish the first LULAC council at Chavez high school and will serve as president. He looks forward to sharing his new found knowledge with others and making a difference in his community.
After graduation, Martin hopes to attend an Ivy League college and major in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Business. With high goals and aspirations, Martin looks forward to the future with a new outlook: “Don’t just fight for a dream; fight for a truth.”
